Tension Force
In this short lecture, we will learn about the force of a string pulling an object.
What is tension force?
Consider hanging an object by attaching it to a string. In this case, the object will not fall because the string supports the object.
This means that the string exerts an upward force to keep the object from falling.
The force of a string pulling an object is called “Tension force” (a slack string cannot pull an object and therefore exerts no tension).
About “Light” string
Most of the strings in high school physics are “light” strings.
Lightness = negligible mass, but it has a more important physical meaning. It means that “In the case of a light string, the tension applied to both ends of the string will always be equal!”
In solving problems, the fact that the tension at both ends of the string is equal is often used, so keep it in mind.
